This special issue offers a fresh re-evaluation of James Fowler's faith development theory, in celebration of his 60th birthday. Challenges to the theory have focused on the role of emotion in faith, the contributions of the psychodynamic unconscious, and the factor of the interpersonal. Now in its third decade, the theory continues to inspire theoretical and methodological reflections. The papers presented reflect the considerable influence of this theory. Niniejszy artykuł stawia sobie za cel udzie lenie odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak przedstawia się zagadnienie postępu oraz końca historii w myśli Kanta i tzw. filozofii postępu. Usiłuje to uczynić z punktu widzenia myśli Piepera – najbardziej uznanego filozofa nurtu realistycznego w XX wieku w Niemczech. Podstawową literaturą tych analiz stały się jego dwie najważniejsze pozycje: U¨ ber das Ende der Zeit i Hoffnung und Geschichte. Ważne uzupeł nienia stanowią informacje pochodzące od prof. Bertholda Walda, najwybitniejszego ucznia Pie pera i zarazem (...) kontynuatora jego myśli. Autor zaczerpnął je z licznych rozmów i konsultacji przeprowadzonych w 2005 i 2006 r. Pozwalają one sądzić, że wiernie odczytał on spojrzenie myśliciela z Mu¨nster. Autor odwołał się również do rozpraw Kanta z zakresu filozofii dziejów: Der Streit der Fakulta¨ten, Das Ende aller Dinge. Wychodząc więc z tej perspektywy i od takich danych, autor artykułu wskazuje na elementy wspólne występujące u powyższych myślicieli w spojrzeniu na problem postępu oraz końca historii. Należy do nich m.in. wiara w ciągły postęp ludzkości, przeświadczenie o pomyślnym kresie historii, możliwości zbudowania Miasta Bożego na ziemi, spełnienia siebie i swego przeznaczenia wewnątrz historii za sprawą działania człowieka, a nie Boga. Owszem, brzmi to dziś niewiarygodnie, ale oświecenie, którego wyrazicielem była myśl wymienionych filozofów, obwieszczało tak bardzo obiecujące oblicze postępu, że zapewnić on miał realizację siebie i wszystkich swych żądań oraz oczekiwań. W artykule tym wskazuje się iluzje w ten sposób rozumianego postępu, biegu dziejów i jego końca. Idea postępu oraz rozwoju historycznego ma teologiczne źródło, a okazuje się nim pozaczasowy koniec, czyli idea Nowego Nieba i Nowej Ziemi. Zarówno Kant, jak i myśliciele postępu przejmują tę ostatnią ideę od chrześcijaństwa, nie uwzględniając jej treści. Innymi słowy, kreś- ląc wizje postępu, dziejów i ich końca posługują się pojęciami teologicznymi w ich nieteologicznym znaczeniu, czyli sekularyzują je. W artykule ukazana zostanie również pewna odmienność, zachodząca pomiędzy ujęciem filozofii postępu a myślą Kanta jako bardziej realistyczną, bliższą chrześcijaństwu. Podczas gdy Hegel, Fichte, Go¨res, Novalis nie liczą się z możliwością wewnętrzczasowego złego końca dziejów, o jakim mówi Apokalipsa, Kant nie wyklucza słuszności interpretacji chrześcijańskiej. Podstawowy zarzut Piepera względem koncepcji Kanta i filozofii postępu dotyczy złudnego i rodzącego rozpacz przeświadczenia, że podmiotem historii jest wy- łącznie człowiek. W artykule wskazuje się na właściwą postawę w obliczu wewnątrzczasowego złego końca dziejów w postaci katastrofy, czy na nadzieję. Katastrofa bowiem poprzedza pozaczasowy koniec – Nowe Niebo i Nową Ziemię. (shrink)

We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...) features of individuals with two mutations were distinct from and/or more severe than those of individuals carrying only the co-occurring mutation. Our data support a two-hit model in which the 16p12.1 microdeletion both predisposes to neuropsychiatric phenotypes as a single event and exacerbates neurodevelopmental phenotypes in association with other large deletions or duplications. Analysis of other microdeletions with variable expressivity indicates that this two-hit model might be more generally applicable to neuropsychiatric disease. © 2010 Nature America, Inc. Przed laty w Philosophical Review opublikowano wyjątki z zapisków F. Waismanna pod tytułem Notatki z rozmów z Wittgensteinem. Obok angielskiego tłumaczenia zamieszczono niemiecki tekst rozmowy. Z niewyjaśnionych nigdy racji zarówno w tłumaczeniu, jak i w tekście niemieckim nie ukazał się tytuł „O Heideggerze". Tytuł ten występuje w rękopisie Waismanna. Z publikacji usunięto również pierwsze i ostatnie zdanie omawianego fragmentu notatek. Zdanie pierwsze brzmi: „Potrafię dobrze zrozumieć, co Heidegger rozumie przez Bycie i Trwogę ”. Według wszelkiego prawdopodobieństwa Wittgenstein odwołuje się w (...) tym miejscu do znanego artykułu Heideggera Co to jest metafizyka?. (shrink)

The goal of this article is to review some aspects of brain anatomy and neurophysiology that are important for consciousness, and which hopefully may be of benefit to philosophers investigating the conscious mind. Taking as an initial point of reference the distinction between “the hard problem” and “the weak problems” of consciousness, we shall concentrate on questions pertaining to the second of these. A putative “consciousness system” in the brain will be presented, paying special attention to diffuse projection systems. The (...) “center of gravity” will be brain connectivity, since consciousness must, critically, be dependent on coherent activity and timing. “Detectors” of synchronicity and coincidence, like NMDA receptors, also necessarily play a role here. To be conscious, we do not need an entire brain. While even large hemispherectomies need not unequivocally affect consciousness, far smaller brain-stem lesions may be devastating in this regard. Even so, the recent discovery by Matthew F. Glasser et al. of 180 separate areas in the human brain cortex is intriguing from a teleological perspective, as it is quite unthinkable that any of them could be “redundant. (shrink)

The main purpose of the paper is to criticize materialism in the philosophy of mind and to search for alternative approaches to the problems of mind, consciousness and body. According to the author, materialism does not present a satisfactory explanation of the mental life of human beings, because it fails to explain phenomena such as conscious experience, sleep, unconsciousness, death. These phenomena point to the fact that consciousness is not identical with the body and can be detached from it. The (...) author adopts the conclusion that the solution to the problem of consciousness is closely connected to the problem of identity of a human individual. A human being plays certain social roles, he or she possesses a body, he or she possesses a mind, but is not identical with them. In its essence, the human being is identical with consciousness. W czasie podstawowego kursu filozofii Lonergan studiował matematykę, co wywarło wpływ nie tylko na jego ogólne spojrzenie na filozofię i teologię, lecz także na rozumienie ich naukowych metod. Podstawowe dzieło Lonergana Insight było początkowo zaplanowane jako praca z zakresu metodologii teologicznej. W głównej mierze znajdujemy w niej filozoficzne studium nad ludzkim rozumowaniem: co właściwie czynię, gdy poznaję? O ile w (...) Józef M. Bocheński began his philosophical career as an eclectic philosopher, then switched to Thomism and finally became a representative of the analytic school. As a Thomist he wanted to reform this orientation by the resources of modern formal logic. This tendency culminated in the establishment of the Cracow Circle (established in 1936) whose members were Bocheński, Jan F. Drewnowski, Jan Salamucha, and Bolesław Sobociński. However, the program of the Cracow Circle was rejected by most Thomists who considered traditional logic (...) as an entirely sufficient device of philosophy. Bocheński was very disappointed by this attitude of his Thomist fellows. His evolution toward analytic philosophy, free of any ideological pressure, can be regarded as his reaction to the conservatism of Thomism. (shrink)

J.M. Bocheński together with J. Salamucha, B. Sobociński, and J.F. Drewnowski formed the so-called Cracow Circle in the 30s of the previous century. Its main aim was to utilize contemporary logic in theology and philosophy of God. The first work in this area was Salamucha’s formal analysis of the prima via, published in 1934. The article was reviewed by Bocheński, who provided a number of remarks concerning Salamucha’s analysis. At that time he did not decide to conduct a holistic research (...) into the prima via. That was done by him only at the end of his life as part of the logical analysis of the quinque viae. This paper aims at presenting Bocheński’s unpublished formal analysis of the prima via from 1953 and proving that it constitutes a valuable completion of his published formal analyses, which come from the 1980s and 1990s. Above all, they provide a more insightful analysis of the notion of movement in the prima via, as well as the form of axiom expressing the lack of regress into infinity. In the formalizations of 1953 there are also interesting analyses concerning the ancestral closure of three-argument relations. (shrink)

It was said that you could find a Jesuit behind most of the scientific accomplishments of the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries. The idea was not far from the truth because Athanasius Kircher of Rudjer Josip Bošković proved to be among the best. But Jesuit studies seem to have passed their peak and it is (...) time to research the early modern science successes of other religious orders. The Parisian Franciscan Marin Mersenne with his worldwide correspondence was the German-Roman Jesuit Kircher’s match and several other Franciscans were not less important. Therefore it is time to give the Franciscan scientists of the past centuries the fame they deserve.We celebrated the 800th anniversary of the Franciscan order in the year 2009. The Franciscans of Ljubljana were mentioned for the first time in 1242 as already established and resident in Ljubljana, soon after the establishment of Franciscan order. Later they were unable to survive the protestant challenge in 1569,1 when almost all citizens of Ljubljana accepted Luther’s Christianity. Although they never really left Ljubljana, the Franciscans officially returned to Ljubljana after several decades.Between the years 1646 and 1660 the Augustinian church of Annunciation of Our Lady was erected on behalf of the Baron Konrad Ruessenstein from the Upper Carniola castle Strmol. The front walls were finished in 1700, and half of a century later the famous Italian sculptor Francesco Robba made the main altar. The Emperor Josef II suppressed the Ljubljana Augustinians in 1784 and somewhat later gave their friary and church to their Franciscan neighbors from the opposite side of Ljubljanica River. The Barons Ruessensteins were not offended by the change and still took care for the church. The Baron Alexis Ruessenstein gave his important alchemical manuscripts to the new friary owners, the Franciscans.2After the death of the Emperor Josef II, Gabriel Gruber’s best student Jožef Marija Šemerl redesigned a former Franciscan Friary for a Lyceum. Gruber, who later became the General of the Jesuit Order, was among the best engineers in Habsburg Monarchy. The church of the Assumption of Our Lady was removed and leveled.3 After the earthquake Ljubljana got the market place in the former site of the Lyceum.The church of Annunciation of Our Lady or simply the Franciscan Church remains one of the most typical sightseeing posts in Ljubljana, even if the name of the square in front of it passed from Mary to France Prešeren, the greatest Slovenian poet, in the time of Communist regime in 1949.Click for larger viewFigure 1. That death has ever been a problem to man is attested as far back as we can trace our species in the archaeological record—indeed, it seems to have been a problem even for that immediate precursor of homo sapiens, the so-called Neanderthal Man; for he buried his dead.

The contribution of Jesuits to the different fields of knowledge, including philosophy, is historically well known. In fact, since the foundation of the Society of Jesus, in the 16th century, Jesuits from different generations and cultures have taken part in the philosophical debates of their time and their different contexts. Since the foundation of the Society of Jesus, in 1540, the Jesuits, individually and as a body, have engaged in a fruitful dialogue between the Christian tradition and different dimensions of (...) human culture. During almost five centuries, numerous Jesuits taught philosophy in academic institutions all over the world. Some of them have their names recorded in the history of philosophy. Of course, the majority of them is not anymore remembered, despite their valuable contribution to the development of the Jesuit intellectual tradition up to our times. In fact, as an heir of the Roman College, the first academic institution founded by the Society of Jesus, in 1551, the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome, is a witness to this tradition, which has been kept alive thanks to the discrete work of both Jesuits and lay intellectuals. Known as the University of the Nations, this institution corroborates not only the capacity of the Jesuit tradition to put faith in dialogue with reason, but also the option to take the concrete reality of each human culture and its historical context as its point of departure. The Jesuits’ willingness to engage in dialogue with different intellectual perspectives is underpinned by one of the most defining traits of the Jesuit charism, namely, the conviction that God can be found and served in all things. Accordingly, Jesuits have adopted, from the beginning, an amenable stance towards the world with its different cultures and intellectual trends. As such, Jesuits have, since the beginning, inhabited the frontiers of human thought. According to the contemporary philosopher Paul Gilbert, SJ, within the institutions under the leadership of the Society of Jesus, it was always possible to maintain an equilibrium between two principles: “intellectual unity” and “openness to the world.” Without detriment to the Jesuit identity, the companions of Ignatius have been willing to dwell in the various dimensions of human reality, in their multiplicity and plurality. Either in the renewal of Aristotle’s and Aquinas’ metaphysics, or in the dialogue with modern philosophers such as Descartes, Kant, or Hegel, and even in the inculturation in non-European contexts, the Jesuits have been able to preserve the Christian tradition through an original development of human culture in all its richness and diversity. With respect to the last century, it has to be acknowledged that a significant number of Jesuits made significant contributions, with recognized competence, to philosophy. Certainly, the 20th century was particularly complex in many respects. It would be enough to recall that this period, which brought with it unprecedented social, scientific, and technological developments, was also the stage for the two World Wars. With the emergence or consolidation of philosophical currents such as Marxism, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Structuralism, and Post-Modernism, the past century was, without any doubt, fascinating from the intellectual point of view. Jesuits such as Karl Rahner, Frederick Copleston, Bernard Lonergan, William Norris Clarke, John F. Kavanaugh, Teilhard de Chardin, Gaston Fessard, Jean Daniélou, Henri de Lubac, Michel de Certeau, Xavier Tilliette, Paul Valadier, Paweł Siwek, Ignacio Ellacuría, Francisco Taborda, Henrique de Lima Vaz and, in the Portuguese context, Diamantino Martins or Júlio Fragata, among many others, were able to engage different philosophical currents, problems and controversies of their times. Faithful to their long tradition of being present in the frontiers of thought, those Jesuits have engaged in a fruitful dialogue with these intellectual trends, offering relevant contributions to different ongoing debates. Within this context, the present volume recalls and discusses the philosophical contribution of some of the most prominent Jesuit protagonists of the intellectual interchange that took place in the 20th century. This volume also intends to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia, which happens just before the inauguration of the Ignatian Year. Decreed by Father Arturo Sosa, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, this celebratory Year will start on May 20, 2021, precisely 500 years after Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order, was wounded at the battle of Pamplona. We are happy that this volume could bring together outstanding specialists in the thought of some of the most prominent Jesuits philosophers of the last century, namely Paul Valadier, Paul Gilbert, Józef Bremer, Jacek Poznański, Alexander Maar, Patrick H. Byrne, M. Ross Romero, Carlos Alvarez, Hélio Pereira Lima, José Gama, Domingos Terra, Gabriel Flynn, Marie-Gabrielle Lemaire, José Sols Lucia, Lorena Zuchel Lovera, Pedro Pablo Achondo Moya, Enzo Solari, Massimo Borghesi, Mendo Castro Henriques, João Barbosa, and Dominique Lambert. In addition, in the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Júlio Fragata’s birth, Maria Teresa Fragata presents a memory of his life and thought. We hope that this volume may be useful to all those interested in the Jesuit philosophical tradition.
